An automation's trigger is what makes it fire — for example, a set number of days after a lead is created, or after a certain number of visits. Some studios can edit these trigger settings themselves, right in the automation, instead of submitting a request. This article explains what you can change and how.
What You Can Edit
Trigger editing is available on both Email and Text (SMS) automations. You edit the automation's trigger value — the number that controls when it fires. The field is labeled to match the trigger, for example:
- Days since lead created
- Number of visits
- Days before package expiration
- Days since first class
- Minutes before class
The field only appears for triggers where a number applies. One-time triggers (like a package purchase or a birthday) don't have an editable number.
Retention automations work a little differently. Instead of a single number, they target clients within a range of days (for example, based on how long it's been since a client's last visit). For these, you'll see a Start day and an End day — set both to control the beginning and end of that window.
How to Edit a Trigger
- Go to Automations in the left menu.
- Open the automation you want to change (email or text).
- Find the trigger field and enter the new value. For most automations that's a single number (for example, Days since lead created). For a retention automation, set the Start day and End day to define the range.
- Save your changes.
Your change applies going forward — it affects who the automation reaches and when, from that point on.
Trigger vs. Send Times
Editing the trigger is different from changing when messages are allowed to go out. The trigger decides what starts the automation; your send window decides the hours and days messages are actually sent. To adjust the send window, see Adjusting Days and Hours for Automation Sending.
Troubleshooting / FAQs
Q: I don't see an editable trigger field. Why?
A: Either self-serve trigger editing isn't enabled for your studio, or the automation's trigger doesn't use an editable number (some triggers are one-time events). To request a change, see How to Request or Update a Custom Automation.
Q: My automation shows a Start day and End day instead of one number. Why?
A: That's a retention automation — it targets a range of days rather than a single point in time, so you set both the start and the end of the window.
Q: Which automations can I edit this way?
A: Both email and text (SMS) automations, wherever the trigger uses an editable number.
Q: Will my change affect messages already sent?
A: No. Changes apply going forward, not to messages that already went out.
